How to playback XG Midi files on Windows 10

Here's a quick guide on how to play XG Midi files on Windows 10 (and any other modern version of Windows) using the VST version of S-YXG50 or S-YXG2006LE. Basically, you just need a free Midi Player developed by Falcosoft that is able to playback any Midi file using Soundfonts and VST instruments (32-bit only).

Follow the steps below and you will be able to play XG Level-1 Midi files on your PC without any hardware XG device or module.

Step 01 - The Midi player

XG Midi files on Falcosoft Soundfont Midi Player

Download Falcosoft Soundfount Midi Player (currently at version 5.7) from here:

The player comes as 32-bit or 64-bit version (less tested, according to the developer). You can choose to download it with or without a GM/GS Soundfont included in the package. For this guide, we choose the version without any Soundfont.

The software has no installer, so you just have to uncompress it in a folder of your choice.

Step 02 - Yamaha XG virtual instruments

Download the VSTi version of S-YXG50 and S-YXG2006LE from here: YamahaVsti [.Zip, 15.6 Mb]

Make sure to uncompress the folder "YamahaVsti" into the Falcosoft Soundfont Midi Player VST folder, usually located at MidiPlayer5 > VST.

Please note: these VST Instruments are 32-bit only. Make sure to use them with the 32-bit version of the player. If you want to use the 64-bit version, you will need a software called Jbridge to convert the VST Instruments into a 64-bit plugin.

Step 03 - Configuration of the Midi player

Once you run Falcosoft Soundfount Midi Player, go to the Midi Player Device Settings by clicking on the gear icon. Check the box labeled "Use Bass (Soundfonts/VSTi)" and close the window.

Configre XG Midi files playback on Falcosoft Midi Player

Next, click on the menu icon, and select the first option "Bass VST(i) Plugins", then click on the last option VST Instrument.

Configure Bass Midi VST to load Virtual Instrument

Once the new window opens, click on the "File" button in order to locate a VST file, you should point it to the directory on Step 02, and choose between S-YXG50.dll and S-YXG2006LE.dll.

Load XG Virtual Instrument for Midi playback on Windows

Once the dll file is loaded, you should initialize the VST by clicking on the "Play" button, which is to the right of the "File" button.

Step 04 - Load and play any GM / XG Midi file

You can now open any Midi file using the folder icon, or simply by dragging any Midi file from your desktop or folder into Falcosoft Soundfount Midi Player, you should see it being added to the playlist.

To start the playback simply click the play button or double-click on the file name in the playlist.
